TOPIC: ISSUE99 - "In any realm of life-whether academic, social, business, or political-the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options."

The speaker points our the contradiction between practical and idealistic point of view, and raise an opinion that practical behavior is the only way to succeed. I fundanmentally agree that pragmatic behavior guarantees survival while idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options. In this sense, pragmatic view seems to be superior to idealistic, but only in a short term in my opinion. It is always idealistic views that have a long lasting influence in the human history.

When it comes to the academic field, we can notice that the most curriculums in colleges and universities are to cultivate students a specific skill in order to survive in the highly competing society in the future. Pragmatism can guarantee a sound and stable profession, while idealistism guarantees nothing. Many college students, who dream to become a scientist or artist, choose to major in engineering or economics, because the latter is more benificial to them when they hunt for an occupation in the future. But this does not mean that idealistic views are of no value, only those idealists can have permanent curiosity about the world, raise thoughtful questions, and finally work out with solutions through fine researches. Albert Einstein, who was a normal student during his university years, discovered the law of relativity because of his pursuit for an ultimate physics explanation of the world. Idealistic views serve as an impetus to promote a person to make all efforts to realize his or her dream.

When we discuss about social and business realm, things we are now giving great priority to are productivity, sales volume, reputations. These are symbols of our practical idol. As these factors are concerned, we will spare no efforts to enhance the effiency of assembly-line to manufact more products in less time, exploit the practical functions of the products to attract more customers, and spend lots of money on advertising to form the band fame. These things are necessary for a company to attain great profits in a short term, but we should not overlook other aspects for a company to survive in the long run. Company culture is as important as profits, and an idealistic leader is exactly the one serves to build up such environment. The examples of Larry Page's Google and Bill Gate's Microsoft cooperation well illustrate the contention. If a company fails to build up an enjoying environment for its workers, no matter how powerful it is now, it will lose its talented workers sooner or later.

As we talk about politics, we will also first find that pragmatism seems to be more useful in election and reelection. Practical behaviour can win the heart of voters in a very short time, and thus help the candidate start his political career. However, when we restropect the history, those politician who have made great contributions to our society are mostly idealistist instead of pragmatists. Mao Zedong, the founder of People's Republic of China, realized his idealstic dream of liberating Chinese people and establishing a republic country; Martin Luther King, promoted a reform to call for equalism between black and white people, which was also his ideal. It is always those idealistic politicians that write a new page of the history and change the process of civilization, and be remembered by generations and generations.

Viewed from the discussion above, admittedly, the society nowadays are paying more attention to pragmatic behavior, which can ensure one's survival. But in the long run,  in any realm of life-whether academic, social, business or political-ideal is of more significance. It is through pursuit of our ideal that promote our society develop in the right direction. Without idealistic views, we will be easily lost in the advancement of the human history.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT239 - The following appeared as an editorial in the local newspaper of Dalton.

"When the neighboring town of Williamsville adopted a curfew four months ago that made it illegal for persons under the age of 18 to loiter or idle in public places after 10 p.m., youth crime in Williamsville dropped by 27 percent during curfew hours. In Williamsville's town square, the area where its citizens were once most outraged at the high crime rate, not a single crime has been reported since the curfew was introduced. Therefore, to help reduce its own rising crime rate, the town of Dalton should adopt the same kind of curfew. A curfew that keeps young people at home late at night will surely control juvenile delinquency and protect minors from becoming victims of crime."

The author suggests the town of Dalton adopt a curfew that make it illegal for the youth under the age of 18 to loiter in public places after 10 p.m., like the neighboring town of Williamsville, for the reason that the youth crime rate during curfew hours has dropped greatly and not a single crime has been reported in the town square where citizen were once most outraged at the high crim rate. The author believes that curfew can control juvenile delinquency and protect young people from becoming victims of crime.

To begin with, I do not find any relevance between the town of Williamsville and Dalton, only in the case that the circumstances in these two towns are the same, but it is definitely impossible. And the auther expand the drop of youth crime to the whole crime rate, which is also not rational. So it is unconvincing for the author to infer that the introduction of a curfew will lead to as a successful result as in the Williamsville.

The auther cites in the town square, an area where its citizens were once most angry at the high crime rate, not a single crime has been reported since the curfew was adopted. But there is a possibility that the town square has always been a place where crime activities seldom happen, what the citizens feel outraged is the crimes conducted elsewhere in the town. In this sense, the auther's citation of the evidence to support his contention is weak.

Even assuming the introduction of a curfew is helpful to reduce the youth crime in the town Dalton, I still find any evidence the curfew can control juvenile delinquency. It is unearthly to say that young people in public places in curfew hours are delinquent ones, and young people kept at home will take wholesome activities. I also see no proof taht the curfew can protect minors from becoming victims of crime. Since young people are kept home, adults are free to go to public places in curfew hours, and criminals can just easily turn their eye to solitary woman, or old people. As a consequence, the crime rate in Dalton town remains unchanged.

The auther's suggestion is flawed and illogic as it stands. The auther overlooks the possible difference between Williamsville and Dalton, and conducts several unreasonable expansion, as he claims a curfew can control juvenile delinquency and shelter young people from becoming victioms of crimes because they are kept at home late at night. The auther should hand out more jutisfiable evidence to convince his readers.
